What Educators Should Know:

Art Means Language
“This mural saved my life” one high school student commented after working with a directory artist in residence at her school. Recently settled to the area after her parents went through a divorce she found herself alone with few friends. Social Studies, Language Arts and Fine Arts teachers collaborated with a professional visual artist for a residency to create a 10’ by 20’ mural for the school. Through that residency collaboration this particular student was able to find a voice to express herself, her feelings and find friends in her new school with a common language.

Whether it is through dance or drama, literature or the spoken word, music, painting, or sculpture – the arts are powerful tools for learning. Artists and teachers have witnessed a liberating effect on students as they learn through the process of creation and reflection during a residency.

Art Means Values
“She believes in you even when you don’t believe in yourself” one student reflected after being challenged by the artist in residence at her school. The artist encouraged her to teach her peers the new vocal techniques that she learned.

A textbook can't teach the confidence that personal expression and encouragement can build. The arts guide the spirit and build self-esteem while fostering positive attitudes toward learning that contribute to success in all academic areas.

Arts in Education Shows Results
The Arts in Education Residency funding has assisted hundreds of Pennsylvania schools to enrich the important work of arts educators, support curricula and provide additional opportunities for students to discover and develop their creative abilities.

The program provides thousands of children and young adults with models for dedication, discipline, teamwork and goal setting, along with catalysts for intellectual and emotional discovery. Learn more about the program and discover how you can bring the power of the artist residency to your school by Planning a Residency.

Education Resources is a list of resources and links for both artists and teachers in the area of arts-in-education.
